A letter from a physician Third of August, 1863 My dear Miss DeWinter: The condition is nothing to be concerned about. As I told both you and your brother, your ears upon examination appear to be in perfect health. I suggest that the voices you seem to hear are the unfortunate result of those unique acoustics particular to the DeWinter estate. As you have never before been of a sickly nature, I cannot ascribe the genesis of these voices to a nervous condition. However, given the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of your young niece, I would not be surprised if the strain had produced an occasional weariness that exacerbates the naturally-occuring noises about your old estate.
